How Pulsed Light Photo-Rejuvenation Works

How Pulsed Light Photo-Rejuvenation Works

The pulsed light equipment works on the principle of selective photothermalysis, ("photo"- light and "therm" - heat) but uniquely utilizes both light and heat energy to achieve maximum efficiency.

Using pulsed light technology for age spots, the light directly targets the pigmented spot's melanin, initiating the heating process. Age spots and other signs of sun damage inherently consist of higher concentrations of melanin (pigment). The light frequency (wavelengths) generated by the pulsed light equipment is designed for absorption by concentrations of melanin, but is more extensively reflected by surrounding skin. The light energy turns into heat which coagulates sun / age spots by heating the highly pigmented areas and accumulatively reaching the required coagulation temperature. At this point these skin cells (those in the heavily pigmented area) begin to die and they are sloughed off by the body like any other dead skin cell.

However, because these cells are not all on the very outer layer of the skin, they must go through a transitional phase. Frequently after being treated, the client will notice that age spots, freckles and other pigmented areas will get darker immediately after the treatment. They also might feel slightly raised when running your fingers over the treated area. This condition may last for a few minutes or hours, but generally will be gone the next day when coloration in these areas has started to fade. This is simply the body's reaction to the high-energy directed at the highly pigmented cells - something that eventually kills the cell but elicits a slightly inflammatory response shortly after treatment.
