| Botox and Dermal Fillers Both of these injectable cosmetic solutions do an excellent job of reducing wrinkles and deep facial lines. However, they work differently and each has an advantage depending on the area of the face and the primary cause of the wrinkles that are being corrected. Botox relaxes muscles. Wrinkles in the forehead or between the eyebrows and, sometimes, around the eyes, are caused by facial muscles that are used many times a day for generating facial expressions. When these muscles contract, they create wrinkles in the forehead or between the eyebrows. Botox relaxes the muscles and smoothes out the wrinkles. However, in more fleshy areas of the face (in the cheeks and around the mouth) wrinkles and lines are often just a product of aging. Changes to the skin as we age, especially the loss of collagen, causes wrinkles to form in skin that is no longer as firm.
